Swedish black metal band Thy Primordial (not to be confused with the Irish band Primordial) was founded as early as 1994. Dedicated to unleashing black art, this group released a whole of six full-length albums before calling it quits in 2005.
"Pestilence Upon Mankind" - as its final piece of work came to be called - is many things. It's fast and furious at times and more relaxed and downright heavy at others. A common thing for all of the parts is that none of them are nowhere near of reaching the heights of the best tracks from other Swedish bands playing in the same genre, like Dark Funeral or Dissection, quality-wise. The execution is pretty good I guess and the production is proper, if not revolutionary. This is really shaping up to be a standard review but the thing is that everything about "Pestilence Upon Mankind" is pretty darn standard. This time I will be taking full responsibility for the review being boring.
As I implied: the album never really impresses. I can't write an interesting review if I can't get into the album in question. This release didn't impress me in 2004 and it sure as hell doesn't impress me today, more than five years later.
Like I said above, the mood of the album alternates between intense and slightly catchy, which is a positive thing to me. I've always liked bands that showcase more than one side of their music, instead of just blasting everything in sight. Anyway, it's basically impossible to tell the songs apart, and that's certainly not a good thing. I'm the kind of guy that wants to be able to memorize songs I dig, so I can carry them with me and relive them in my head.
Conclusion? Fans of latter-day Setherial may be in for a treat here.
