There are those who would swear to god that Rush is the greatest band ever. That Alex Lifeson is the best guitarist, Geddy Lee is the best bassist, and Neil Peart is the best drummer ever… and really, truth isn’t so far away. One thing is for sure though, anyone who’s listened to Rush, acknowledges their technical abilities, and their contribution to progressive rock music. It’s no wonder that musicians of all genres note them as one of their main influences. So notable is their career, that 30+ years since they first started, Rush still continue with the same enthusiasm and passion… and most importantly, with the same members!
This is their 18th studio album. It would be visionary to expect a surprising or refreshing sound from Rush. They’ve done this years ago. But still, their latest compositions look and sound so different than everything else circulating around us, that it seems cruel towards other bands that these old goats refuse to leave the top spot, so many years on! The album is so full of styles and moods, and songs are mainly short in length. We’ve got the hard songs tracks like “Far Cry”, rock ballads like “Armor and Sword” and “Workin’ them Angels”, prog anthems like “Larger Bowl”, and I could go on commenting about most tracks of the album. Just listen to the drumming “Main Monkey Business”, the bass lines of “Malignant Narcissism” (whose only flaw is that it lasts too little) or the guitar work of “Way the Wind Blows” and you’ll realize how good these guys really are. Geddy Lee’s voice is more mature than ever before. The screamy voice only dogs could hear is long gone and has been replaced by a sensitive and warm tone that’s a real pleasure to listen to.
After albums like “2112”, “Moving Pictures” and “Hemispheres”, it’s too hard to be objective about Rush. The revolution they created in the 70s and the masterpieces they had released, still sound fresh as ever and set the standards for every aspiring progressive rock band.
After all, there is no other 3-piece that sounds like an entire orchestra! The masters are back, and nobody can stop them!
