“Engel” is a relatively new band from Sweden that was formed in 2004, in Gothenburg. If you check their members, you may recognize some names, like Niclas Engelin who’s been touring with In Flames as their guitarist and/or Marcus Sunesson who’s worked with The Haunted and The Crown. So pretty much you can imagine in what kind of music these guys are into.
In 2007 their first full length album “Absolute Design” came out, featuring twelve songs. People around the internet have been labeling them as Industrial Metal which is something I don’t really get. So probably two things happen, either their demos which I didn’t listen are industrial, or people have no fucking idea what industrial metal is, cause this album is no industrial metal. If you listen to this, you’ll see it’s Gothenburg Metal with influences from the Alternative Metal scene. At least that’s my opinion.
If you’re a fan of the traditional Gothenburg Metal scene, you may probably not like this album, because as I said, it has some rather debatable stuff in, like the keyboards, the “emo”-sounding clean vocals and in general a more modern approach. Me myself, I don’t mind these stuff, but I do mind its saturated sound, because I can grow easily tired of its common and routine music. I mean, I’ve heard all these before but at least not under this alternative metal perspective – which is the only thing that un-bores me here. But then again, after listening to it a lot, I eventually got bored of it again… Well not forever; I’ll still be giving it a listen every now and then. And that’s because among all the fillers and the usual stuff, there are some really cool songs that I liked, and those are “Next Closed Door” and “Calling Out”. There are also two more cool songs among the rest average tracks.
Don’t get me wrong, I did like the album, but as I said, you can grow easily tired of it. Would I recommend you to buy it? Ehm… I’m not sure, I can’t even decide for me what to do. Give it a listen and see for yourself. At least the production is good and polished. By the way, am I the only one that thinks the band’s name comes from the guitarist??? --> Engelin - Engel <--
