 Brown Brigade is a Canadian Heavy Metal band, originally created as a side-project of the former Sum 41 guitarist (Dave "Brownsound" Baksh) and his cousin (Vaughn Lal). Out of desire to play some metal music, “Into the Mouth of Badd(d)ness” was born sometime in September of 2007.
The band has created a nice concept around the “Brown Knight” and this album; a hero that came to save the world from corruption and fight evil. If you want more of this story you can either listen to this album, or watch the interesting music video of the song “Aggravation Plantation”. Some more clues about the nature of this hero can be found either in the cover or in the artwork inside the booklet, where some nice and well-done drawings are placed. Also as a bonus you get a patch with the band's logo.
The music of this album is flowing in the spirit of those 80’s Heavy Metal/Hard Rock bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest with some Blues and more modern influences. I can’t say the music is that original, but there are a few nice and catchy songs like “Purebread”, “Aggravation Plantation” and “Make Way Fe de Yout! Dem”. Unfortunately the rest of the album is not in the same level and I can grow easily tired of it, since they lack both in inspiration and a personal style. There are many bands that play this music, but you need something special to distinguish from the masses.
All in all, the album isn’t that bad, but it isn’t something special either. The jump from the Pop-Punk into Metal may seem easy, but it needs a lot effort to make a name. I hope to see something more unique and more inspired next time by the band, since they aren’t incapable at all. Having influences is good, but making your own is even better.
