Tales from the Twilight World, is quite a bit darker than most of Blind Guardian’s CDs, the style is still certainly still pure Blind Guardian, it just seems to have taken an interesting step into the dark. Not true for all songs, but it has surely maturated from the earlier CD’s like Follow the Blind and Battalions of Fear.
The album starts off with “Traveler in Time”, a very fast song, that reminds you of the older songs, but a bit more polished up, you can tell Hansi’s voice has improved. Along with some effects added into the fray, you get the masterpiece song. Surprisingly this song is not so popular among fans, although, I can’t imagine what more you would want from a song.
Overall, the songs are very strong with some seriously powerful songs. The first several songs, will only back up my original opinion of this album. From the haunting choruses of “Welcome to Dying” to the melodies on “Lord of the Rings”, you constantly see examples of the masters of power metal evolving and creating their music almost flawlessly.
One major flaw however, exists. It is entitled “Lost in the Twilight Hall”. This song had serious potential and was good in the demo. As soon, however, as they cleared it up, and added effects to this song, it was destroyed, demolished, and utterly, made terrible. It is not a good song. Some of the voices were made WAY too high, and the chorus was not very good. If it were not this song, I would have a different opinion of this album.
The Last Candle was another good song, but it was wrecked by the ending part, much too high pitched, and would have better if it sounder more angry, rather than the way it did. Not a bad song, but, well, it could have been better. The other parts of it, though, almost save this song, wonderful melodies, mixed with superb vocals create a very mystical atmosphere on this song.
“Tales From the Twilight World”, is a very solid album, a step in the right direction for Blind Guardian, a much more matured album, with only a few flaws holding it back from perfection. It lost 1.5 points for the unneeded edits, and high pitched vocals some of the songs have. The other .3, were caused by songs like Altair 4 and Weird Dreams, which were OK, but very short.
All in all, there isn’t much more to say. If you want a exhilarating piece of power metal pick it up. But, unlike some of their other albums, this isn’t a must have. If you do decide to get it, you’ll probably enjoy it, not for everyone, but a solid decent album.
