Single review: Blind Guardian - Fly
Another Single from Blind Guardian. Decent, yes, and a nice warmup for the album “A Twist in the Myth”. Once again, this is a so-so single from Blind Guardian.

Anyway, it starts off with the song “Fly”. A rather uplifting song. The guitars and instrumentals don’t really sound like Blind Guardian to me though. They really changed some stuff up here. It’s nice to see a change, but I can’t say it was my favorite change they ever made. However, I thought the vocals and lyrics were very well done. I like how Blind Guardian isn’t afraid to change their style and say “screw you” to people how give them low scores and don’t like it, that attitude is expressed in this song. It’s a really good listen.

“Skalds and Shadows” is the next song. It is the acoustic version, and almost the same that would later come out on the “A Twist in the Myth” album. A very medieval sounding song. Can’t say I liked it very much here. I think the song songs much better with all the extra effects and instruments added on the studio. This song really gives you the feel of one that you might hear 500 years ago sitting around a campfire with a bunch bards running around.

“In a Gadda Da Vida” is the last song here. It doesn’t really sound like Blind Guardian at all, being an Iron Butterfly cover. At first, it’s a purely different style, it’s so much darker song. It’s a very heavy song, very emotional as well, but still has the dark side of metal stamped upon it. It also has some extra effects added onto it, it makes a very unique song from Blind Guardian, because most of Blind Guardian’s songs are epic or at least aimed at that effect, this one, is literally about marriage and love. Don’t worry, it’s nothing really corny. Still, they overdid it on the extra effects, and the song itself isn’t that good. They perform it very well I believe.

So, all in all, this album is a very nice preview of what you will see on the next album. Is it worth it? Depends on who you are. Hardcore BG fans should pick this one up, if for no other reason than In A Gadda Da Vida, which is really a unique song, especially coming from Blind Guardian. For others, you may not really find your money worth it. A good solid single, but nothing to scream about. Most people will probably find this a nice enjoyable release, but won’t be crazy about it. A good listen overall.
