I don’t know how many of you could name a worthy Croatian band, if someone asked you to, but now after checking this release, the answer should definitely be Ashes You Leave! It’s a band that was formed back in 1995 and this is their latest release, after almost seven years of waiting. Their earlier releases were into Gothic/Doom Metal but nowadays I believe the Doom part has mostly eclipsed - this release is more oriented in Gothic Metal, a genre that in my opinion suits them better than before.
Apart from the genre, few changes in the band also took place, like the record label and the line-up, with three new members, including the vocalist. Songs of the Lost is probably the best release of the band so far, not only because of the maturing of the members but also because of the production; the band at last got the quality of production they deserve, because the sad true is all their previous releases had a devastating production comparing to their abilities and the quality of their music.
In fact everything here is at its best. Starting from the vocals, with Tamara’s sweet voice matching perfectly with the music, moving to Marta’s violin which gives a sadder tune to the atmosphere with its leading role and ending with the right drumming all over the album. The compositions and programming are superb too, as result of a five year songwriting, which probably made fans expecting nothing less than this. I don’t place myself among the fans of the band, but this release goes straight to my favorites for the year. I highly advice you to check this even if you didn’t like the previous albums.
Among my favorite songs here are “Apathy Overdose” with its haunting melody, “Taints” which made me love Tamara’s voice and Placebo’s cover of “Every You Every Me. This cover gives lessons of a how a cover should really sound, with not just covering the song, but truly incorporating it in the band’s style. Definitely best cover of the year.
